As It Matters

H2O: Why Does It Matter?

Water is a basic human necessity, and humans can only survive for a few days without it.

So why does over 35% of the world's population not have access to clean water?

The simple answer is because of politics and governments not having the stability to provide for their people. Once you look more into the issue, though, the layers of complexity make it difficult to come up with an in depth answer. If you would like to learn more about water inequalities, below is a link to a video that highlights only a few of the dozens of serious problems that come with contaminated water as well as documenting what people in a neighborhood without proper water sanitation has to go through.

After watching the video, I had to research more into what was being done to combat this situation. While there are some governmental efforts going in to this,  there are many organizations that have been created solely to provide clean water to whoever needs it. One of these that caught my attention was P&G.

P&G has been in business since 2004 creating and distributing this really amazing, scientific solution to disinfect water. They make purification packets that, when put into unclean water, separate dirt and bacteria to reveal drinkable water. You really have to see the process to believe and appreciate it, so I would recommend watching videos on the process. But for right now, the way that the water gets clean is through coagulation, flocculation, and disinfection. This just means that the dirt is grouped together and brought to the bottom while a chemical is released to get rid of all the bacteria we cannot see.

Along with the visual benefits of P&G packets, here's a list of the microscopic perks they give as well:

Technology such as this is such an incredible innovation and provides help to the countries that need it most. Hopefully in the future, water won't be considered as a privilege but as a human right.
