Just 1 hot dog per day could harm your health
A major analysis in Nature Medicine collated data from more than 60 previous works examining how processed meats, sugary drinks, and trans fats affect health. The investigators reported that even small quantities of these foods would elevate the risks of type 2 diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer. Specifically, one hot dog daily boosted the risk of type 2 diabetes by 11% and that of colorectal cancer by about 7%. A 12-ounce soda every day, on the other hand, raised the risk of type 2 diabetes by 8% and ischaemic heart disease by 2%.
The study goes on to reiterate findings from earlier research implicating red meat and sugar as causal factors in colorectal cancer in the young. The experts suggest minimizing or avoiding processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fats as a measure toward improved health. Interestingly, no level of processed meat consumption appears to be safe; the more you eat, the higher your risks become.
Lead author Dr. Demewoz Haile observed that their approach was pretty much on the conservative side in that it showed increased health risks caused by regular consumption of these foods. He mentioned the risk for processed meats
