World Humanoid Robot Games

The World Humanoid Robot Games is an international sports competition for human-like robots. It opened in Beijing on Thursday.

The event is hosted by the municipal government of the Chinese capital along with other groups. This comes as the nation works to improve the capabilities of humanoid robots.

Robots from companies and students in 16 countries, including Japan, marched into the venue for the opening ceremony.

A robot from a Beijing-based firm represented the contestants. It stated that they will compete for the future by using knowledge while carrying on the spirit of humanity and harnessing the power of science and technology.

Later, robots took part in various sports. Spectators at a soccer match laughed as competitors collided and fell on the field before being helped off.

Full competitions begin on Friday. Over 500 robots are set to participate in 26 events that include track and field, dancing, and martial arts.

The Chinese government aims to elevate the country's humanoid robotics to the world's top level by 2027.
