Pixxel pushes into orbital data centers

Pixxel pushes into orbital data centers

Indian startup Pixxel is working on a pathfinder satellite that will test new orbital data center technology to gather geospatial intelligence. The company announced on May 4 that it aims to develop a 200-kilogram-class satellite, set for launch by year-end. This satellite will join six existing Firefly imaging satellites, which need to transfer large data amounts to ground stations for processing.

The new pathfinder will utilize advanced data center processors for AI training, with support from Indian tech firm Sarvam for onboard language models. Pixxel's CEO noted that traditional ground data centers are facing energy and regulatory challenges, making orbital platforms appealing. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are also exploring this field.

The demonstrator is being developed at Gigapixxel, Pixxel’s new facility in India. Pixxel has already launched its six Firefly satellites, capturing diverse spectral data for various applications and plans future Honeybee satellites for more advanced imaging.
